Let God Love You

Richard Rohr considers life as having two halves.  The first half is when you are performance focused including during the spiritual side of your life. You want to prove yourself to God, following laws, commandments, have-to's. However you do not really love God at this time.  You are just afraid of him.

This first half does serve a purpose.  It is when you create the container for your true self which you will eventually find in the second half. During this latter period, a larger true you will now emerge. You will be allowing God to perform on or for you. This time will be marked by large questions being asked by you during some dark moments. It is then that you will discover His mercy and tenderness that will supplant the fear you had in the first half. As a result you will truly begin to fall in love with Him not just afraid of Him.
